achievements and accomplishments as well as encourage and inform
amputees and the general public in regards to amputee mountain

professional inline speed skater before loosing his leg in a
motorcycle accident in 2001, developed a device to assist above
knee amputees while riding down stairs and steeps.

Kurt Yaeger, a former professional freestyle BMX rider who has
competed in the X-Games, and a recent below knee amputee, has been
using and highly recommends a new pedal system that uses magnets to
hold your foot on the pedal.

I lost my leg in a motorcycle accident. If you Google Bill
Henry Firefighter Amputee there are several articles that can
tell the whole story better than I can type it. I have returned
to racing BMX with my kids. We got them into it and as a way to
help them learn on the track I wanted to return to riding. A
year later I have just completed my first state season finishing
4th overall for my age class. I am currently ranked 10th in the
district. I am the team manager for Factory Cyclcraft Southeast
(CyclecraftBMX.com) as well as a rider for them. Here are a few
pictures from practice and the state championship this past
weekend. If you send me a friend request on Facebook there are
many more pics to choose from. I hope this will help to inspire
amputee kids and adults around the world to keep striving for
their goals and never say quit.

The following picture and information was submitted by Susan
Murray.
I am an above the knee amputee road bicyclist. I road for 15
years with my prosthesis on, hating every sitting minute. I
wanted the freedom to stand up, to get the power from standing
and thus designed this adaptation for my bike. Now I wear a
prosthesis with a Ferrier coupler and before getting on the
bike, take off the bottom half of the leg. This way I can
"stand" on the platform I built and really power for miles and
miles. I LOVE biking now! Susan.

My name is Billy Allred. I am a bilateral BK for the last 12
years due to a car accident. I am 33 years old and as an EX-State
Champ in wrestling I try to stay in shape. Now seeing as I cannot
run very often. I Mt bike 3-4 days a week around 20 miles per trip.
I started riding Mt bikes again about a year ago when a friend gave
me an old Trek 800(no suspension). Road that thing into the ground.
I just got my new Trek 3500 hard tail( but with front suspension)
What a difference! A friend gave the link to your site and it gave
me tons of inspiration. I wanted to see if I could send you some
pics for your site and maybe become a member. This is the first
place that I have seen amputees riding bikes. It lets me and others
know that we are not alone. If you know of anyone wanting to ride in
the Hampton Roads area please let me know. I go often and hard!

The following pictures are of Jim Kelmen, a double below knee leg amputee.
Since loosing both legs at the age of 10, Jim has enjoyed
cycling for fun and transportation. He quickly discovered that
riding a bike was physically easier than walking, especially
long distances.
Jims' current prosthetic legs were manufactured by Mitchel

Although Jim has been riding without a helmet for over 30

Both Jim and MTB-Amputee would like to thank Catherine Litt,
a reporter for the "Nanaimo News Bulletin" newspaper,
for donating a replacement bike after learning that Jims' only
form of transportation was stolen. Catherine often reconditions
used bikes and donates them to those in need.

The following pictures are of Dax Jaikel, a below
right knee amputee. Dax, a
professional cross country endurance racer lost his leg due to an
accident on May 28 2003. Dax was hit by a truck traveling in the
wrong lane while he was training for the 2003 La Ruta de los
conquistadores race.
By October 2003, Dax's first two legs, which were
built in Brazil, were ready for use, one for walking and one for
road riding. By the middle of November of 2003, Dax was back on the
road training for next years race season. If you would like more
